The Google Search Engine
This one is the most important search engine with the highest percentage of all web search traffic. It is estimated that 95% of all web surfers use the search engine and Google is said to have 70%. The reason for this is the affiliate network. At this time it has Yahoo, AOL, Earthlink and AT&T.
They are touted as the last remaining search engine with pure search engine results, ie they don't mix pay per click listing in with the organic search results.
Going through their submit page it takes 90 days or longer to get spidered. Google applies search engine return positioning based on an ever changing combination of algorithm that looks at your page content, page title, outgoing link relevance, incoming links, page reputation and page rank (PR)
So nailing down the precise combination of elements is a real challenge. The best strategy with them is to work the off page elements like crazy. At the moment it is possible to get a top ranking with almost no on page optimization if you have enough incoming links. There are some very creative ways to acquire links but the most effective and long lasting is through article submission.
For the foreseeable future Google is the BIG DOG and this is the main focus you should have.
