DMOZ - Open Directory
With the help of volunteer category editors Open Directory is a significant directory to get an incoming link from. Google's page rank system considers this search engine a trusted authority site. Google also uses their returns to supplement the returns you get from them.
Make sure you have a good quality site setup before you submit to them because they don't take just anyone. Your website must have good content and offer something that will improve the Open Directory's offerings.
It can take months to get listed so my advice is to submit it and forget it. Make a note of when you submitted it and send a very friendly inquiry a couple of months later. Remember it's a volunteer force so be nice.
