Picking Domain Names

A domain name with keywords that are descriptive of your websites content is a good place to start. The current search engine algorithms seem to favor domain names with keyword relevancy. When you do a search you will notice the keywords you searched for in bold text. If your keyword is in your domain name it will be bold too.

This makes it easy for the eye to spot and be drawn to. So when registering domain names, strategy is to use the keywords relevant to my sites content. The unfortunate thing about getting the name you want is that the competition for domains is fierce and the really good ones are taken, many times by domain speculators that intend to sell them for a profit down the road.

Some ideas to help with picking domain names are putting a dash or hyphen between the keywords.  In almost all the domains I have purchases have hyphens. Most hosting company's will host a domain with about 60 characters but your not likely to need that many.

If your trying to brand  yourself or your business long domains will be hard to remember and with the hypen added into the mix it gets even more confusing. Try to get  the .com version for yourself if branding is what your after. Most people have heard dot com so many times it is almost automatic for them to hear your domain name and think you said dot com when you really said dot net.

For search engine optimization it doesn't matter though. The search engines are not favoring the .com over .net or .org. There are a lot of other dots out there too so just do some browsing at a cheap domain registration website and get started.
